It was New Year’s Eve in 1968 and it was just before dawn as Master Sgt. William H. Cox and First Sgt. James T. Hollingsworth were stuck in a bunker in Vietnam.
Cox said they were in a very bad spot, they were “really putting on a fireworks show for us.” Meaning, that the enemy was sending mortars and rockets in their direction. It wasn’t a safe area.
They made a pact in that moment: “If we survived this attack, or survived Vietnam, we would contact each other every year on New Year’s.”
They kept the promise for about five decades until Hollingsworth passed away. Then Cox kept the promise one more time, standing guard at the casket and delivering a heartfelt eulogy.
Cox says, “There’s a bond between Marines that’s different from any other branch of service. We’re like brothers.”
