Crane pulls sunken freight ship from ocean floor, recovers 1,400 cars trapped inside

When most people think about ship wrecks they imagine old pirate ships full of treasure. It turns out modern ship wrecks can be loaded with treasure too!

A pair of ships collided in a busy shipping channel about 65 km off shore in the North Sea. The Baltic Ace, a huge cargo vessel, sank to the ocean floor.

The Baltic Ace had been hauling 1,400 cars, all of which were lost in the wreck. The sunken cargo ship created a hazard for other channel travelers and would likely cause environmental damage.

A special team was organized to salvage as much steel as possible from the wreck. The mission came with several challenges, not the least of which was the incredible size of the sunken vessel.

The salvage mission ended up costing $73 million, but was ultimately successful.
